Why the film ...’substance’ is relevant for an ageing population

Hollywood’s pursuit of eternal youth often overshadows the importance of seasoned talent. Demi Moore’s portrayal of an ageing celebrity in Coralie Fargeat’s film "The Substance" chronicles the harrowing journey of Elisabeth Sparkle; portrayed with raw intensity by Demi Moore. Her obsession to retain her youthful appearance takes her down an unforgiving pathway.

In a desperate bid to reclaim her former glory, Elisabeth resorts to taking a substance; which births her egotistical alter ego – a younger and more formidable version of her. Both versions seek the limelight; however, Elisabeth’s alter ego’s blind ambition eventually merges both into a disfigured being.

Fargeat's narrative is bold and grotesque. It serves as a mirror to the extreme measures some may consider to maintain; relevance in an industry that often sidelines mature individuals. Moore's portrayal of Elisabeth is both haunting and poignant.

"The Substance" stands as a testament to the power of authenticity and the importance of redefining beauty and relevance; where age is seen not as a limitation but as a reservoir of depth & talent.
