    History has a habit of repeating itself and despite the strides made, toxic masculinity stubbornly persists. From Hollywood scandals that dominate headlines to subtle power plays on the tube, its harmful impact is inescapable. While the term  toxic masculinity  is relatively new, the damaging behaviours that come with it have been ingrained in our society for generations.   Toxic masculinity refers to a set of harmful beliefs and behaviours rooted in rigid, stereotypical views of masculinity . It promotes the idea that men should be physically strong, reject traits deemed “feminine” and pursue power and status to gain respect.     These beliefs often glorify aggression, dominance, and the suppression of emotions, equating vulnerability with weakness. This skewed concept of “manliness”   discourages self-care and empathy, creating a cycle of unhealthy behaviour  that negatively affects both the individual and those around them.     Beyond celebrity culture, toxic masculinity manifests in everyday interactions. From the office to the pub, subtle and overt displays of male entitlement and aggression are pervasive. Women often face condescension or dismissal, while men who challenge these norms may be ostracised.     The future is uncertain, but awareness  is growing. The #MeToo movement and increased dialogue about gender issues are steps in the right direction.      Creating a safer and more inclusive world means challenging toxic masculinity at every level, from the workplace to social media. It’s only through collective action and ongoing conversations that we can begin to foster a culture of respect and genuine support for all.

And then the press sensed something was up and tried to turn it into something bigger.”   Royal biographer Andrew Morton  has pointed out a predictable media pattern of comparing royal sisters-in-law, seen before with Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson; setting them up for scrutiny. The media frequently compared Diana and Sarah, which fuelled rumours of rivalry and put a heavy strain on their relationship. A similar narrative regarding Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle has been taking over headlines since Meghan and Harry’s engagement, with the media portraying them as contrasting figures embodying different aspects of royal life. While there is undoubtedly some genuine tension between Meghan and Kate, it’s crucial to recognise the media’s role in amplifying and perpetuating this narrative.   • Lucy Tammam, activist and authentic couture designer

    Lucy Tammam is an ethical designer and the visionary for the House of Tammam. Her gradual rise in the fashion industry has been a story of heartache, redemption then realisation. It is through her lens that we learn that fashion is more than a commodity. She is interested in the craftmanship and the ethical process of designing and making bespoke garments where she has a clear understanding of the source of the fabric and the practice behind it. Garments are often worn for special occasions or for everyday activities; however it is important that they have longevity; are carefully crafted and can be repurposed ; it is this message that Lucy conveys. Lucy was born in Poole, Dorset and her ethical journey started at the age of 9 when she questioned the practice of eating meat; she soon developed a passion for veganism and became an eco-warrior advocating for change. Her activism lived on, as she commenced her degree at Central Saint Martins. Lucy stated that her passion to incorporate ethical practice into her designs was initially frowned upon at Central Saint Martins where ‘ recycled fashion ’ was seen as an unprofitable business concept during that period. Lucy felt like an outsider and soon realised she would need to create a product and brand that was at the heart of her value system. Alongside her school friend Lucy Robinson they launched their company Tam & Rob; however, after sometime Lucy Tammam moved on to continue her craft as a couturier and launched the house of Tammam. Lucy’s business journey has been insightful and at times soul destroying. She recalls moments when she was prostrated on the floor crying and wondering if life could get any worse; however, through resilience and positive thinking, she was able to navigate through the last year by creating products such as the eco cotton & silk scarves; moved part of her business online and continues to widen her business network. With the support of Government grants and the amazing team behind her brand, she has managed to navigate through a particularly difficult year for her business. The house of Tammam’s fashion show ‘Flight’ was hosted at Samsung, London and demonstrated the innovative texture of the House of Tammam. The carefully tailored pieces captured the essence of Spring & Nature; as well as incorporating Professor Ed Hawkins climate stripes into some of the pieces where blue signified the cooler years and red the warmer years. The textured pieces had great fluidity and movement. Some of the pieces had elements of 1930s feminine silhouettes with a modern twist. The bird dress  was an intriguing and vibrant piece. The show was inspiring and there was so much to celebrate about the house of Tammam. A pearl of wisdom shared by Lucy for emerging designers and entrepreneurs is that it is important to believe in yourself and never give up on your business concept; in addition to this, broaden your network  and get into the right circle.

  • Fierce, fabulous and out of the box fashion

    London Fashion week provided colour, innovation and revolutionise the way we wear fashion. The catwalks were fierce and unapologetic.  Elements of the 90s will make its comeback, as Grunge chic arrives with flashes of 80s colour. More individuals are adopting a hybrid approach when working, so lounge and casual wear is very much at the forefront. Clothing has become more functional, pragmatic and comfortable. Grunge chic has political undertones as it signifies a rebellious element to fashion. Fashion and the political landscape remain intertwined; as we are reminded about the ‘Black Lives Matters’; ‘Me too’ and ‘Climate change’ movement which has shaped the way we view clothing. These campaigns have allowed us to take an introspective look at society  and its systems which can create inequalities  and the pollutants that can affect our environment. Shoes, trainers and boots will have sleek wedges and platforms. Platform shoes will provide a more elegant look, as one’s height is elongated further. Layering will make a come back with a twist of 90s grunge but more chic. Handmade dresses and tunics will be worn with pants. Sparkles are everywhere with a return to neo disco chic. There will be a return to hipster trousers and skirts; as well as dropping things low. The mini and macro mini was showcased  in Versace’s show. Also expect to see lots of sheer opaque and see-through chiffon and georgette fabrics. Cut outs are very prominent this season which is very 90s. Crotchet and knits being mixed with unconventional fabrics and lots of hanging fringes have been apparent in such shows as Burberry, and Stella McCartney which look fabulous.

  • Quin-Leigh Hammond pushes the boundaries of Namibian fashion

    The Namibian fashion industry has undergone an amazing evolution of late with the African nation hosting two consecutive fashion weeks in Windhoek . The Fashion Council of Namibia  was also established; as well as plans to develop the Fashion Museum of Namibia . At the centre of this growth is Honeycassie Designs , a local fashion house founded and creatively driven by designer and leather craftsman, Quin-Leigh Hammond . Quin Leigh was inspired by her grandmother who worked as a seamstress during her early years. Quin developed a love for fashion and completed a BA degree in the Arts; majoring in Textiles and Fashion. She describes her pieces and collections as future ready. The unique designs and cuts she uses lend to creating fashionable items; which illuminate elegance but still have the spirit of modern-day landscapes whether they be in the hustle and bustle of the Namibian capital city and her hometown, Windhoek. Quin’s source of inspiration is omnipresent and range from songs, nature to vibrant colours. In 2015 she launched Honeycassie Designs; which is the driving force for this brand. Quin's designs were exhibited at Kent State University as part of the "Fashion of Southern Africa" exhibition; which earned her exclusive runway shows at the 2019 and 2020 Windhoek Fashion week. This event earned Quin nominations for fashion designer of the year at the 2020 Simply You Fashion & Lifestyle Awards (Namibia) . She also released annual collections and collaborated with multi-award winning: performance artists; local influencers; fashionistas and brands. Most recently, through the Honeycassie Design brand, Quin launched the 'River Blue' collection. Quin Leigh continues to move towards creating more eco-friendly designs. She also enjoys re-inventing old designs by changing elements of an older piece.

  • Omar's 'Gender of nature' capsule shoot is sparking a flame on the fashion scene

    Aspects of Omar Bayoumi's Spring & Summer collection is made out of leftover fabrics which are 100% natural and upcycled. His collection is raising awareness around the impact of fast fashion and the impact it is having on the environment, so it gives homage to sustainable clothing. Omar's collection has strong elements that encapsulates the fluidity of air and the sensation of fire. His recent photo shoot was captured by the photographer Mia Franzosi who created a dramatic depiction of his garments through her carefully framed, artistic shots; which also shared the beautiful lines of Bayoumi's garments. Bayoumi's inspiration derives from his research around Egypt's architecture and history. He describes part of his collection as 'II AIR', which depicts the mind. It is the fluid lines that remind us of the freedom we have to think and to live. In addition to this, we have 'III FIRE', this collection captures the 'chaotic' spirit. It is this spirit of chaos that affects the unusual movement of the garment and generates fierce energy that resonates through the Seth dress.
